Pakistan’s New Ambassador to UAE Assumes Office

Pakistan’s new ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Afzal Mahmood, assumed office on Wednesday. He replaces Ghulam Dastgir, who was serving as ambassador to the UAE.
“Afzal Mahmood was serving as Pakistan’s ambassador to Bahrain before taking over the new post,” the UAE’s state-run Wam news agency quoted details released by the Pakistani embassy.

Afzal Mehmood has extensive diplomatic experience and has represented Pakistan in various countries and international forums.

Notable diplomatic responsibilities include being the Pakistani Consul General in Houston from 2013 to 2016. He has previously served as Pakistan’s Deputy High Commissioner to Bangladesh from 2009 to 2013.

He also represented Pakistan in the United Nations Environment Program and Human Resettlement Program from 2004 to 2007.

His other government responsibilities include representation at meetings on climate change in ASEAN, SAARC, Indonesia, East Africa, Bangladesh and Germany.

During his tenure at the Foreign Ministry in Islamabad, he performed various responsibilities. These include the DG USA and Europe, Director, Deputy Director and Assistant Director for Iran, Turkey, Europe and South Asia.

Afzal Mehmood holds a degree in Economics from Government Postgraduate College, Chakwal Punjab, and a degree in Turkish from Ankara University, Turkey.
Besides Urdu, English, Punjabi, he is fluent in Indonesian and Turkish language.
